Teaching About Conditions that Affect the Heart

You might be overwhelmed when you hear terms like CHF, HTN, ejection fractions, mitral valves, CABG, beta blockers, and angiograms. After all, the heart and associated medical terminology is all quite confusing unless you have medical training. At Choice Health at Home, we believe it’s essential to understand your heart health, heart medications, and heart-associated medical terms used around you.  We have developed a specialty teaching program to help our patients. We also provide remote patient monitoring so that our patients can receive daily oversight of their condition.

Hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is a common cause of heart disease, and the risk of having this condition goes up with age. It typically has no symptoms, and even those with advanced heart disease may have no noticeable symptoms until they experience a major cardiac event such as a heart attack. Because it’s possible to have hypertension for years without being aware of it, it’s important to work with your doctor early to control it. Blood pressure is taken as a routine part of any doctor’s appointment.

Heart failure is one of the most common reasons for hospitalizations for adults aged 65 and older. About 6.2 million Americans suffer from this chronic disease in which the heart is unable to supply enough blood to meet the body’s needs. Symptoms may include shortness of breath, water retention, severe fatigue, weakness, persistent cough, and swelling in the legs, ankles, and belly. Adults with heart failure must be diligent with taking their medication, eating less salt, and getting daily physical activity.

Choice is here to help with specialized education on both hypertension and CHF provided by our nurses and therapist.  Our goal is to both improve and understand your condition.
